UNDERSTAND THE FIELD

What is neurology?

Neurology is the field of medicine concerned with assessing and following conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Movement, sensation, balance and memory are among the functions considered during a neurological assessment.

What happens during a neurological assessment?

Assessment starts with a discussion of symptoms and medical history. A neurological examination may assess muscle strength, sensation, reflexes, coordination and cognitive function. The history and examination findings guide whether imaging or other tests are needed.
